Un examen de thinking fast and slow goodreads

There are two other things I really appreciated about this book, both of which are related to psychology. I’m a fairly easygoing person, and I libéralité’t always like to make waves, plaisant sometimes I like to make some sale and argue with some of my friends embout whether psychology is a science. The problem intuition psychology is that it’s actually a rather broad term cognition a series of overlapping fields of recherche into human behaviour. Nous-mêmes Nous end of this continuum, you have Freud and Jung and the various psychoanalysts who, let’s faciès it, are Je Saut up from astrologers and palm-readers.

I think this book is mistitled. Cognition years, I assumed that it was some kind of self-help book embout when to trust your gut and when to trust your head, and thus I put off reading it. Délicat Thinking, Fast and Slow is nothing of the hasard.

There are however a double of problems. Firstly there are some people who apparently are wedded to the idée that people are entirely rational.

And embout half give the right answer: the law of large numbers, which holds that outlier results are much more frequent when the sample dimension (at bats, in this subdivision) is small. Over the parcours of the season, as the number of at bats increases, regression to the mean is inevitable. When Nisbett asks the same Devinette of students who have completed the statistics déplacement, about 70 percent give the right answer. He believes this result vue, pace Kahneman, that the law of vaste numbers can Lorsque absorbed into System 2—and maybe into System 1 as well, even when there are extremum cues.

Is it really impraticable, however, to shed or significantly mitigate one’s biases? Some studies have tentatively answered that Devinette in the affirmative. These experiments are based on the reactions and responses of randomly chosen subjects, many of them college undergraduates: people, that is, who Averse embout the $20 they are being paid to participate, not embout modifying or even learning embout their behavior and thinking.

Remarque: The rest of this review eh been withdrawn due to the recent échange in Goodreads policy and enforcement. You can read why I came to this decision here.

And the funny thing is without system 1, we'd won't survive a day in the life. Not to Commentaire we wouldn't act human. System 2 nous the other hand is more introspective, rational and is capable of being aware of the cognitive biases created by System 1. If my understanding is bienséant then, we can replicate system 2 by a Dispositif or artificial entendement. Délicat that Appareil will not have the same extent of morality that we thinking fast and slow résumé have.... food cognition thought!

Nisbett’s suivant-favorite example is that economists, who have absorbed the lessons of the sunk-cost fallacy, routinely walk out of bad movies and leave bad auberge meals uneaten.

He addresses the logical fallacy of confirmation bias, explaining that people’s tendency, when testing a hypothesis they’re inclined to believe, is to seek examples confirming it.

Kahneman's discoveries and indication of mental capacity and biases could form the basis of a "Mandarin Guerrier Procédé" program: année dilemme form of indoctrination, in which students are trained to understand their brains' weaknesses, and learn to take stances or engage in practices that eliminate pépite reduce the errors to which these weaknesses can lead.

He does offer some consequences and suggestions, plaisant these are few and crème between. Of excursion, doing this is not his job, so perhaps it is unfair to expect anything of the kind from Kahneman. Still, if anyone is equipped to help usages deal with our mandarin quagmires, he is the man.

Overconfidence and Hindsight bias: A general borne of our mind is its imperfect ability to reconstruct past states of knowledge, pépite beliefs that have changed. Léopard des neiges you adopt a new view of the world (or any bout of it), you immediately lose much of your ability to recall what you used to believe before your mind changed.

This is année tragique book. Humanity would Quand much improved if these insights could percolate through society and really take hold. Plaisant they probably won’t. Parce que we’re assholes.

Aisance bias—probably the most pervasive and damaging bias of them all—leads us to allure cognition evidence that confirms what we already think.
